Connecting Twilio to AI: a message that arrives without an app and without an inbox

Twilio can be connected to AI. The assistant sends a text message to a phone number from the number attached to the connector, and it can read back sent and received messages to see whether something arrived. A text costs money and cannot be recalled once it has gone, so sending happens only on explicit request and only after the number and the text have been shown.

SMS is the dullest channel there is, and that is exactly why it works. No app is needed, the recipient does not have to log in anywhere, and the message lands on a device almost everyone carries. For an appointment reminder, a code, a note that the engineer is on the way or a short update on an incident, it is often the only way to reach someone in time. The Twilio connector in IntraGPT is deliberately narrow. The assistant sends a message and can afterwards see what became of it, and nothing more. That second part matters more than it looks, because it answers the question that follows every send: did it arrive. What the connector does not do is hold a conversation. An incoming text does not reach the assistant as a chat; this is an outbound channel you can look back into, and that is how it should be used. Anyone who wants a genuine two way conversation is better served by one of the platform's chat channels.

What the SMS connector can do

Send a text message

The assistant drafts a short message and sends it to the number you name. It lands on the recipient's phone and cannot be withdrawn afterwards.

Numbers with a country code

A text only arrives if the number carries its country code. When someone gives a number the way they store it themselves, the assistant adds the country code and asks when that is unclear.

Keeping it short pays off

Above one hundred and sixty characters a text is split into several messages and each part counts separately towards the cost. The assistant therefore keeps the wording short and puts explanations in an email instead.

See whether it arrived

For a number or a period the assistant can read the messages back and say whether one was delivered, is still on its way, or never arrived.

One fixed sender number

Messages always go out from the number attached to the connector. Nobody can ask the assistant to write on behalf of another number.

Where a text makes the difference

Healthcare

Situation
An outpatient clinic calls people to confirm tomorrow's appointment and reaches only half of them.
What the agent does
The assistant pulls tomorrow's appointments from the connected system and sends each patient a short message with the time and the location, once the planner approves.
Result
The confirmation reaches the patient at a moment they can act on it, and the desk keeps time for people who genuinely have a question.

Installation and service

Situation
An engineer runs late and the customer who has been waiting in all morning hears nothing about it.
What the agent does
The planner asks the assistant to let that customer know it will be later; it shows the number and the text and only then sends.
Result
A customer who does not call in anger, and a planner who does not have to type a message between two jobs.

Education

Situation
A class is cancelled at the last minute and the notice in the learning environment is only read after the first coffee.
What the agent does
The assistant sends a short message to the group, using a fixed wording in which only the subject and the time vary.
Result
Students know before they get on their bikes, and the notice in the learning environment stays the formal record.

Industry and manufacturing

Situation
When something fails outside office hours, the engineer on call needs to know even if their mail is closed.
What the agent does
The assistant sends the incident notice as a text to the on-call number and then checks whether it was delivered.
Result
A notice that does not disappear among mail alerts, with demonstrable delivery behind it.

Customer service

Situation
An agent wants to know whether the callback confirmation sent yesterday actually reached the customer.
What the agent does
The assistant looks up yesterday's messages to that number and says what became of that one message.
Result
A factual answer during the call itself, instead of an assumption about what the customer should know.

From number to first message

  1. 1

    Connect with your own account

The connector runs on your own Twilio account and the number held there. An administrator sets the connection up in the platform and can break it again in one action.

  2. 2

    Set the permissions

You decide which roles may use the assistant with this connector. Sending costs money and is irreversible, so it is rarely something for everyone in the organisation.

  3. 3

Agree what may go in a message

Record what the assistant does and does not put in a text, and keep the wording short. Detailed information belongs in an email or behind a link, not in a message that pops up on someone's lock screen.

  4. 4

    Use the assistant

After that a colleague simply asks for a message in the conversation. The assistant shows the number and the text, sends once approved, and every send is recorded in the log.

Connected securely

A text is gone the moment it is gone

There is no button that recalls a sent text message, and every message costs money. That is why this connector is tightly bounded and never silent.

Where the data lives: Nederland of de EU

Always shown first

The assistant shows the receiving number and the full text before sending, and does so only on explicit request. There is no silent send.

The sender number is fixed

Messages go out only from the number you attached to the connector. A user cannot work around that in the conversation.

Restrained with data

A text stays on the handset and is visible to anyone who picks that handset up. So keep medical detail, passwords and case numbers out of it and record that boundary.

Drafting happens with you

The text is composed on your own server in the Netherlands with open-weight models. Your conversations are not used to train models.

Questions about the Twilio connector

Can I connect Twilio to ChatGPT?

For an organisation that is unwise. You would give a public service the ability to send messages at your expense, without roles and without an audit log. IntraGPT works with your own Twilio account and a fixed sender number, shows every message first and records every send.

Does IntraGPT work with Twilio?

Yes. Twilio is in the connector catalogue. The assistant can send a message to a phone number and can read back sent and received messages to check how delivery went.

Why does the assistant ask about the country code?

Because a text without a country code does not arrive. In practice people quote a number the way they store it themselves, so the assistant completes it before sending anything. If the country is unclear, for instance with a customer abroad, it asks rather than guesses.

What happens with a message longer than one hundred and sixty characters?

It gets split into several messages and you pay for each part. The recipient usually sees the parts as one message, but the cost adds up. Keep messages short and put detailed information in an email or behind a link.

Can the assistant reply to incoming texts?

Not through this connector. This one is outbound: send, then look back. Incoming messages can be read back, but they do not start a conversation with the assistant. If you want a two way channel, one of the platform's chat channels is the right place for that.

How do we know a message really arrived?

By having it looked up. Twilio keeps track of what became of each message, and the assistant can report that in plain words: delivered, still on its way, or not arrived. That saves a trip into the dashboard and gives an answer you can repeat to a customer.

What does a Twilio connector cost?

Connecting it is part of the project we run together. What drives the work is whether the assistant may send on its own or submits everything first, which roles may ask for it, and whether a data source is attached. The SMS charges themselves run through your own Twilio account and sit outside IntraGPT.

How long does setup take?

The connection itself is a short action for an administrator, and a test message can go out the same day. In practice the time goes into agreeing who may have messages sent and what may and may not appear in one.
